AMTO E-News
SEPTEMBER 2009
Annual Meeting
Maryland District will
hold the annual District meeting and awards luncheon Saturday October 24
at Chartwell CC; general notice from District is
imminent. Immediately prior, at 9 - 9:45 am, our AMTO Council
annual meeting, chaired by Dave Pullen, will be held at same location
(probably downstairs Troon Room). Attendance by
all officials is encouraged at meetings and luncheon. Let's
have major representation at the AMTO and District annual meetings and District
luncheon. Reservations - and prepayment of $20 - is necessary only
for the District luncheon. (AMTO will subsidize $10 of the $30 actual
cost for RSVPing - and paying -
members.) RSVP to wilsonfe@aol.com,
and forward your check to arrive by October 13 to Frank Wilson,
On Saturday, 21
November, Mid-Atlantic Section Annual Meeting and awards luncheon will be
held. Mid-Atlantic Officials annual meeting will be held then
also. A general notice from Mid-Atlantic is expected.
August
survey . . .
Average
of survey responses:
1.
Longest time to be paid: [76.6 days]
2. Quickest
time to be paid: [24.7 days]
3.
Follow up needed [made]? [yes]
4. AMTO,MATUA etc [always] pay you? [no]
5. Gratis
services? [yes]
6. Explanations:
a. tournament organization misdirection in response to billing, b. conscious
delay to combine separate events in 1 check, c. unknown.
Few responded,
by the way, but apparently AMTO's payment process
isn't as timely as our members prefer - evidence still being anecdotal.
In any case we will address the perception and the fact. Our
Treasurer will receive additional procedural support: DaveP
already helped with forms, and JerryB
will help with accounting software. And your Committee
will consider payment in advance of settlement of accounts to AMTO
by tournament organizations. Expect timeliness improvement.
Be
a good customer though; make sure Referee, Assignor, Area Rep, and/or
Treasurer (Sharon Spangenberg) has your
complete correct work record on your last day at the venue.
Data
Cards [+ a correction]
[Note: July's e-news included an
incorrect date for submission of data cards: The correct deadline
is Monday, 28 September, 2009 - not 29 September.]
Deadline is 28 September for
submission of your 2009 Data Card, fully completed and original - photo copy
unacceptable. National Office will
reject incomplete cards. Even though
deadline is September 28, you may include work scheduled or expected through December 31, 2009, and, for these entries only, ignore signatures.
Be faithful to the legend in the upper
left side of the work record page when documenting “Type” and
“Position”. Do not leave blank or invent
descriptions.
If you need another card (e.g.,
misplaced original or 2nd page), obtain another from Section TE Dick Cervi.
Destination for submission is Dick Cervi, 201 Jacobs Run,
If USTA membership expires before March 31, 2010, consider renewing now.

Scenario
Puzzle for Self-Education
August's*
answer: Deny the let as a Roving Umpire. Point goes to player
B. Player A's shoe was within his control. When player steps
out of it during play, player may not call let and must continue play.
(Opponent may call let.) Same answer for a ball fallen from a pocket
or a dropped hat by player.
September question: As a Roving Umpire, you're called to a court to deal
with a conflict. Player, behind 15-30 having lost the last
point, questions net height and requests net measurement. When
confirmed net in fact is high by 1/2", player requests
replay of the last point. What do you do and to what effect on the
match?
