TO ALL MID-ATLANTIC OFFICIALS:

The Annual Mid-Atlantic Officials USTA Training Schools by a National Trainer Evaluator will be held on January 19-20, 2008 in the Baltimore/Washington Metro Area at The McDonogh School, 8600 McDonogh Road, Baltimore, MD 21117 and in the Richmond area at The Steward School, 11600 Gayton Road, Richmond, VA 23233 on February 2-3, 2008.  The 2008 training school is not mandatory for National and Professional line and chair certified officials.   However, you are reminded that any  NL/NC and PL/PC certified official who holds lower certifications as Referee, ITA (IC) or USTA and lower must attend the Saturday training for those certifications.  Also, you can expect to receive your Friend at Court (FAC) around January 15, 2008 or sooner.  However, there are very few changes to the 2008 FAC.  So if you do not receive your 2008 copy before you attend school, just bring your 2007 FAC with you.

The Saturday, January 19 and February 2 sessions will cover the USTA, Referee and ITA Schools.  Saturday’s training will begin at 9 AM and continue until 5 PM.   This year’s school procedures require all Officials to download open book tests from all three schools, complete and bring the answer sheets with you to the training for grading.  Students MUST arrive with completed test answer sheets.  Those who do not come with answer sheets ready to turn in at the start of class may only audit the class and must attend another class for certification.  All questions on the open book tests are taken from the 2007 FAC.  The Open Book Tests will be on-line later this month (December).   Only certified or previously certified officials should attend the Saturday training.

Sunday, January 20 and February 3 will have training specifically focusing on rudimentary procedures and techniques.  Newer officials and Sectional Officials with less than five (5) years experience are required to attend the Sunday training.  Sunday’s training will begin at 9 AM and end about 3 PM.  All Sectional and higher officials wishing to be certified as a Referee and/or ITA must also attend the Saturday training.

All Officials must attend an annual school and pass the test for their level of certification.  Again, National and Professional certified officials must attend school for any certification they hold below National level.  Also, please be advised that in order to work collegiate matches, all Officials must take and pass the ITA School Examination.

Please note that YOU are encouraged to attend one of the two National Training Schools in our section.   And all certified officials are expected to attend a National Training School.   If you can not attend one of the schools in our section, you can elect to attend any National Training School in any other section that fits your schedule.  We will schedule Provisional training for new persons who express an interest in   becoming umpires during the year, but this training will not be as extensive as the National Schools.  Those additional schools have not been established at this time and they will focus primarily on provisional functions.  The Provisional schools can not be used to satisfy annual schooling requirements for Sectional and higher certified officials.

Now it is important for you to select a training session and register.  Registration numbers must be at least 15 and reported to the National Office two weeks prior to the date of the school.  Please select one of the sessions below and return to me no later than January 5, 2008.  More information and directions to your selected training site will be provided upon receipt of your registration.  If you have additional questions, please call me at (410) 953-8161 (home); (443) 812-9279 (cell); or send me an email at ErnieMosby@aol.com.

Yours in Tennis,
